You will have to bear with me as its been a while sine i have setup L3 on a switch (5 years).

I am workingg with a 4506-E with a 6l-e sup.

I have nothing hooked to the switch at the moment.

When i isses the ip routing command it takes the command but does not place it in the running-config. Is this becuase there is no ip intfaces up yet?

When i put in the ip route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 X.X.X.X it does not show in the routing table. Again is this being cause by no ip interfaces being up ?

Yes, with no layer 3 interfaces up you will see no routes. The reason ip routing doesn't show in the configuration is because it's a default setting.
