When attempting to open or run a spyware scan, CounterSpy utilizes nearly 100% of the cpu. Checking the Sunbelt-Software website indicates this could be a conflict with Microsoft's Anti-Spy program, however this particular computer is not running that program. Running Windows XP, SP2 on a Dell Dimension 4550 desktop. Have run Lavasoft Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy and deleted found problems, also this computer has McAfee's Internet Security running and the McAfee firewall is configured to allow CounterSpy to access the Internet. Any suggestions?

Are you running the scan in Safe Mode or Protected (normal) mode? Sometimes the scanners get into a loop when trying to deal with crapware that reinstalls as fast as it is removed, or looks for scanners and tries to trip them up. I usually run the scan in Safe Mode, to give the scanner the edge, since most (but not all) crapware is disabled in SM.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sunbelt Software tech support provided me with my solution. Not only do they have a great product, but apparently a great support staff as well. See their suggestions below. Deleting the file mentioned in the last paragraph below resolved the problem.

"There are a few places to check for this kind of behavior first I would suggest running the 2 patches below and then trying it."

Install the correct one for your operating system.
Microsoft Windows scripting file for Windows 2000 or XP:

Microsoft Windows scripting file for Windows 98 or ME:

If that doesn't work then I would try deleting the file
C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\Counterspy Client\
