I just told my current employer that I got a job offer. They told me that they did not want to lose me and offered me a 12K increase and a gas card. Some reasons for wanting to leaving my current job were having to do things that were totally out of my job description, pay was mediocre, insurance costs were outrageous and the amount of hours worked. The current job offer pays 5K more than what I am making now and I get a 20% bonus at the end of the year. The hours at the potential employer will be long as well. Anyone have any advice?

* I don't recall the exact percentage, but the majority who accept a counteroffer still leave within 6 months.

* Bonuses are not guaranteed.

* The additional compensation is close in both compaines. If you make 50,000 @ 20% = 10,0000 + 5,000 = 15,000 vs 12k + gas card.

* Hours almost equal.

* Whose benefits are better?

==> and a gas card.

That alone may turn out to be quite valuable.

With gas prices going shy high that gas card may turn out to worth tons.

Benefits are better at the company I am considering going to. I should also mentioned that I have a little over an hour commute (one way).

At which company do you think you'll be happier?

The potential employer. I used to work there. I left due to an incompetent boss. He has been replaced.

I'd lean towards to the potential employer.

I appreciate all of the comments.

Studies seem to indicate that many who accept counter-offers still end up leaving. There is also the chance that they may just be buying time until they find someone to replace you.

That is another good point langleymass.

I have actually decided to take the counter due to several reasons. I have only been here 3 months and do not think I have given it a fair chance and I also do not want to be known as a job hopper. I am not getting any younger and I need to put in some time at an employer (more than 2 - 3 years which is how long I have been staying at employers) and realize that it is not going to be perfect all of the time.

Congratulations Swi!

I took a counter-offer/promotion this past May. I have been busier (and thus happier) since then. I hope it continues, but who knows... In the interim, I am practicing my managerial skills and making a decent living.

Think of yourself as a smart cat... you see a mouse run by and you chase it down. In the meantime, someone opens a tin of tuna. You drop the mouse and head for the prepared meal. The mice will still be out there when your done.

That's great news Swi, and I hope it works out for the best.
