Count by Date Type 'categories'

What steps do I need to take to achieve a report on a Count of employee grade ratings by Data Type-Value categories.

For example, in a single table I have a field called 'Grade Range' containing several Data Type values within the field (from a pull-down menu). How do I arrive at a report of a count 'across' these Data Type values within the field?

Grade 1 to 8: 5
Grade 9 to 12: 8
