Couldn't Find Installable ISAM - runtime error 3170

I am using vb5(sp3) with sql6.5 and excel 2000 (as well as access 2000, etc). I have created an excel spreadsheet via vb and manually entered data onto the spreadsheet (this is the idea) but when I try to read from the updated spreadsheet I get this error:

"Couldn't Find Installable ISAM - runtime error 3170"

what do I need to do?

Any help much appreciated
