I'm currently updating a dept to 2000 Pro that uses Fifth Third Direct banking software.

Situation:
-It installs without error
-When you log on for the first time it wants to update
*If Java Console is not enabled, it comes up with an iKernel.exe error at the very end of the update installation
*If Java Console is enabled (and system has rebooted) this error appears:

Error: Could not load Java Virtual Machine.
Please verify that the application has been installed correctly.

I have also tried enabling Java Logging before fresh install to no avail.

Note: JIT compiler has been checked the entire time.

VM problem? 5/3 Direct problem? Possibly a VM update conflict? Any ideas?

Go to Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Objects. What is the status of the VM? If anything other than "installed," uninstall it and download/install a clean copy.

It only says installed, but I did it anyway. I also tried installing the installshield iKernel.exe update from java, no go. I've tried disabling the JIT compiler. ARRGGGHHH

What Service Pack level are you running of W2K. If less than SP3 you may trying installing SP3 as this updates the MS Java client.

Or you can try going to the SUN link given above and try using their Java Client as the default and see if that works for you.
