My pc froze and I turned it off. When I turned it back on, the monitor came on, but NOTHING else, like the pwr supply was dead. I took it in for repair and they said its the hard disk. Not the controller, the HD. Can this be possible??

Here you go if you think that it might be the hdd unplug it then turn on your computer. But ill tell you what its proboly the cable going to you hdd i would check that first well after unplugging if from the mobo to see if thats what it is.

Ok i just reread my post and i found it to be missing a little info.So here it is if you unplug your hdd and then turn on your computer it should pull you up in dos mode. But i have seen this problem before and it was just the cable. If your hdd is broke after all check the all the pins on it when people plug and unplug these alot they tend to jiggle the cable which has a tendency to either loosen or break pins they can usually be fixed with a soldering iron just make sure you know what your doing and make sure not to drop any solder on the hdd except on the pin connections.

About the only way the HDD could cause this would be if the motor control circuits shorted out and caused the PS to crowbar. Otherwise, even if there was something wrong, you should be able to see the power lite and a video splash. Ed Fair

Not so a couple of months ago my friend had this problem on his computer he was running windows 98se and the cable was bad but yet you couldnt pull up anything on his computer no splash screen i replaced the cable for him and it worked perfectly again.

Try booting from a bootable floppy to see if fdisk can see the drive and report back. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
