What are/is the typical cost of credit card transactions.

Is it cheaper if your terminal uses the internet versus a dial circuit for the credit Card authorizations

The cost varies from vendor to vendor. Usually quite a few cents per transaction. Some will say you get free paper, but be careful, nothing is free. Most platforms that are available online don't charge more for that feature. We push online now. Any thing to get modems out of the setup. Also it makes remote support easier.
You will have to get pricing in your area. Start with whoever you bank with and go from there.

Does anyone know how large (bytes/kilobytes) a credit card transaction is?

Authorizations are usually between 200 and 500 bytes.
Collections (when required) are usually under 200 bytes.
It all varies by bank, but the actual stream of information necessary is not very big.

If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid
