As far as study requirements, that really depends on your level of expertise. One who has been working with Windows for several years will probably only need one book to brush up on the testing material. While one who is starting out will need several books, software, and possibly some test network equipment....
there are also websites that advertise discounts for cert vouchers... Matt correctly notes that buying a couple PCs, a hub/switch/router, some cables, and some eval software to go along with the books is the best way to study...
