Thanks for the input...I'm designing a web page (pretty basic stuff...little javascript and perl) and need to create some gif files...what's the most cost effective tools?

Thanks. I've had someone recommend the macromedia Dreamweaver/Fireworks software...Have you heard anything good, bad, or ugly?

i use dreamweaver / fireworks

fireworks is an image editor (one of the best for web images)

dreamweaver is an html editor. it can be used as both wysiwyg(design view) or an editor like notepad (code view)

they are both excellent programs Ranjan

Hi mate,

If you are looking for cost effective then as xutopia mentioned Gimp is as good as it gets. I would have to disagree however that it is hard to use. [wink]

I have never had any problems with it, I also use Fireworks and just started using Photoshop. Out of them all, Gimp doesn't have every feature that the others have but the basic concept is the same and after all, it is free.

I would say that out of all the graphics programs that I use that Gimp is actually the most user freindly and also has a few nice features that the "paid" programs don't.

If you want to spend money on a program then fireworks is priced at $299 (US). The upgrade is $149 (US).

But, for a basic site and only a few images, why spend money on a program when you can get one for free to do the same job??

Hope this helps Wullie

agree with wullie. gimp is good if you are not a professional web designer. but if you are a pro dreamweaver/fireworks is worth the money you spend on them. Ranjan

One of the programs I use is 2D&3D Animator from Ok, its an animator but its flexible, you can produce an assortment of images with it. Great for buttons, banners etc. Not sure how much it sells for, I got it for free after doing some beta testing, but its worth checking their site.

You should check on Tucows or Zdnet, you will find countless programs, both shareware and free!

wullie,

You are right I'm from a photoshop (effective, but not cost effective) background. Sometimes when faced with something new, it isn't what you don't know that gives you the most problems but what you already know. :(

I saw excellent things spit out from GIMP. But the best tools are always the ones you master. ;) Gary Haran

Try . Their Paint Shop Pro graphics editor is the best buy on the market. Ok...If you purchase the anniversary edition, you get 10 of my tutorials included.

Still, I've got fireworks, Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro is the best buy for the money.
