Corrupted Excel files

We have a 5.0 sp5a server running Legato Standby
Server. Workstations are NT 4.0 using 4.80 sp3,
Office 2k.

From time to time we have had Excel files get
corrupt. We get the error "The instruction
00X00581CE0 referenced memory at 0X0000073A. The
memory could not be read." It then crashes Excel. Of course, each time we get the message the memory location is different.

The file then has to be restored from salvage or
tape back up.

It seems that this problem only started when we
moved to NT 4.0.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

Check those technet articles. Until you figure it out, don't be so quick to "restore". Have someone else try to open it instead. I've heard all this stuff. Is network being refreshed often? Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

I have had numerous people try to open these files all with the same result. I have seen the M$ articles and haven't found a cure as yet.

These files all seem to have some issues in common:
These files are all files that originated in M$ Office or Office 95.
They are also added to by dynamic link or cut paste and assemble.
They also have macros in them that nobody seems to remember why they were originally put there or what they do.
The status of the file on the server is such that I cannot even rename the bad file until a sufficient amount of time elapses. I sometimes get the M$ error "Cannot delete FILE:Access is denied. The source file may be in use."

Thanks

What exactly do you refer to by "network refresh" settings? Are you familiar with Netware? I do appreciate your assistance with this persistant and annoying problem.

: )

I'm not familiar with networks at all, really. However, a long time ago, my network admin told me that one of the problems my user might be having was network refresh settings, which I believe is some type of time increment--like 10 or 15 minutes or something like that. I've used that term with various in-house network persons since then, and they've always seemed to know what I was talking about, even if I didn't, LOL.

Wish I could help more! Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

The network refresh settings can apply to 2 things. Broadly, the first is the settings on your server. The servergoes out and checks the network on a regular basis. As this setting has parameters, you can apply a specific network refresh (the server holds tables of information about whos on the network).

The second area that it could apply to are the routers on your network. The routers need the same type of information (just more detailed) and as a result, have to refresh the tables they hold about whos on the network.

Check both server and router(s) to ensure that they are not refreshing too regularly. I cannot give you any advice on what a good refresh setting would be because I have never come across this problem before.
