If the message comes up that a databasse is corrupted and the repair option does not work, are there any other ways to try to recover that database?

Judy,
you must do a repair and then compact, that should do it

If the compact and repair does not solve the problem. you could try importing all the object to a new database. Usually, if there is a problem with one of the objects then the import will fail on that object.

When I do a repair, I get 'unrecognized database format' and cannot go any farther.

Microsoft provides a utility called Jetcomp, which you can download form the MS website. Jetcomp will repair a wider range of problems than Access Repair. It mayy or may not solve your problem.
