I have to reinstall CE as we have services that won't stop, reports are taking 4 times their normal period to run, etc.

The question is can I just start the install and it will update all files, yet preserve the CE 85 and in/out directories, or do I need to treat this as a migration?

Hi,
Try the repair option of the install program first.

If that does not do it..Drop and recreate all the services
( except the WCS and APS ) ..I would, of course, back up the in/out directories first..

Only then would I do a full reinstall - I think you will need to keep the APS the same, or you will lose all the authorizations, etc..

Hello

Goes without saying to backup the in/out directories first.

You could stop the services using pskill and then in CCM delete and re-add the servers - This worked for me.

How would I get the output directory (historical instances) to refresh again once I have the new CE install?

Is there any way to reinstate the user information after a complete reinstall?

Hi,
Create the Output server with the default locations, then revise it to point to the file system location where the instances were stored..However, I believe it is the APS database that 'knows' about those instances, so you would need to reinstate the APS data - That would restore all the original settings, including users...
If you retained the database that the APS referenced, or exported the data, you should be able to point the new APS to that data ..

Not sure if you have ventured into this as yet, but essentially if you backup the Input and Output FRS (or the entire \FileStore folder) and then make a backup copy of the system database, you should be good to go for a re-install.

Remember the install could see the original CE85 DSN and look to set up the APS database again and potentally overwriting the data so the b/u is important.

Once you have the install completed, log in to the CMC and make sure you can get in and see the any sample reports that were installed (if you chose them). Do you see any of the original reports?

If not, then you should be able to attempt to migrate the system database from the old one to the new one. This will require you to create a DSN to the old database.

Then in the Configuration Manager, stop the APS, double-click then choose the Confguration tab and click the Specify button. This should present you with a choice to "Copy from another source..."

This will give you a dialog to choose the source (old db) and the target (new db) DSN's

Not very elegant, but if all goes well, you should be back in business.

Thanks, Gecko, always good to read your posts.

I have the reports xfered over, I did that using the Import wizard.

My concern now is the historical instances.

In other words, how might I tie the old historical instance to the new reports?

I'm nervous about trying to backdoor them into the CE85 database, any other thoughts?

Thinking about how everything is stored in CE, you have the instances (historical) which are the physical files located in the Output FileStore on the drive and then there is the APS database which maintains the pointers to these instances and links them with the parent report.

What I have done in the past was to zip up the FileStore and back up the APS database, the do the new install. Once this was done, Copy the old FileStore Contents into the new location and use the Database migration tool to migrate the old APS database to the new one.

This would put back in place all the users, and references to reports and their instances.

Since you have import the reports into CE, I would think of these as new reports with no history. They are going to have new ID's that will not likley match the ID's used in the old database to link the historical data.

I do not want to go where I am going, but I think with your super sensing spidey sense you know :)

Do you still have a back up copy of the original APS database and the original FileStore? If so,

You might try this
1. You can use the CCM, to smoke your current APS database and essentially make it blank. This is done in the CCM by stopping the APS, opening the properties, Specify, Recreate Current datasource.

2. In the CMC add your keycode to the Authorization part. This will probably get blown away in #1

3. In the CCM, enable all server and start them. be sure they are enabled.

4. Log into CMC and verify the system is operating

5. replace the FilseStore with your original backup. This will ensure all the ID's match the original database.

6. In the CCM, stop the APS, properties, Configuration, Specify, Copy data from another source, then use the old database for the source and the new one for the target and import the database.

This should work. I hope this is not a production environment. If it is try this in test first just to get the stepping right and make sure it works.

I have also seen cases where the report history was, well... history and the only resolve was the exact steps you have taken by importing the reports in and starting fresh.

Good luck

Thanks for the response, Gecko. I was hoping for a means to link the current ID's (as you know they are different) and then populate the CE85 database (APS) with the old output filestore information by using a bridge table or some such.

I really don't want any part of the contaminated install involved, this is a high visibility install which is hit by 500+ users throughout the day, it has to remain up and running.

BTW, do you surf, or is it a WEB reference? I did a bit of it in OB in San Diego.
