I am getting the following error when trying to create a new user via account manager :
Unable to set initial password for user: username
You must set the password before the user can log in
Unable to change user password
General failure occured in processing the request.
External error: Cannot write protected password entry.

The password entry has been set. Is this a case of a corrupt
authentication database. The user created is in /etc/passwd but an entry is not in /etc/shadow ?
Pointers in the write direction would be appreciated

Warren

I know this is a bit back to basics, but have you checked the permissions on /etc/passwd. Perhaps a fixmog -i

I don't remember the path to the authck (or authchk) utility, but this might be the fix for you. I believe it will correct any irregularities in the password database. You might want to check the man for this utility.

Thanks for the responses
ran integrity then fixmog -i upon receiving first error message. Ran /tcb/bin/authck -av ( check Password , terminal and protected database ).This also gave the same error viz :Fixing inconsistencies in the entries for username
cannot write a Protected Password database entry for username.

owner and perms correct for /tcb/files/auth/* .

I have a SCO OpenServer 5.04 system, has been running fine for over two years. A program started few days ago, when the Unix boot up, after pressing ctrl-D and confirm day and time by pressing "Enter". The message "Checking TCB", "Checking protected pasword and protected subsystem database" and the only thing on screen is a blinking "-" singn, and the system stay like that for ever.
Can any one has such experiance or any idea can help?
