Hello,

I am trying to do a restore of an individual Exchange 2003 mailbox on Backup Exec 12.5. The restore will start, get to a certain point and then the byte count stops climbing. When I look in the log, it will be stuck on a certain message and has added a lot of strange characters onto the beginning of the subject of the message. I suspect these may be corrupt messages, as if I exclude them, the restore will proceed until it gets to the next (possibly) corrupt message. I have selected to restore corrupt files on the backup options, and have also tried with it unselected, each to no avail. Is there anything else I can do besides stopping the job every time and excluding individual messages?

Thanks,
Trav

restoring exchange is a pain. It sounds like your restoring from a brick level backup... from past experience that not usually a good thing. If you have a full backup of the actual message store I would restore it to a recovery store then perform a merge. Assuming you have a non-brick level backup. Also... there are some tools out there that may help. Quest makes a exchange recovery tool (I use this one)that a pretty good job. It can read right from backup files from BE, attach and open a database and then allows you to select indivual emails and restore them to either exchange itself or to a pst file. Ontrack also make some decent recovery tools. Both cost money but they work. The Quest tool costs about $1k, not sure about the ontrack software.

I completely forgot to post on this...the problem was actually fixed by a patch. I should have just updated in the first place I guess...
