Hi,

I'm using Indesign for windows and have an artwork file I need to access but it just keeps crashing the software. It was created in CS but I've tried opening it in both CS & CS2 but it crashes each time is there anything I can do to uncorrupt this and open it? Any help would be appreciated

Thanks in anticipation

do you get any warnings about typefaces or anything else?

Thanks for responding - I don't get any information it just instantly crashes and closes Indesign.

Try using the File menu/Open command rather than double or right clicking on the file.

did you open the file directly from a cd? Or by double clicking it?

If the first, copy the file to your computer first, open InDesign and use the the open function (don't double click)

Do you have the latest updates for your InDesign copy, if not try downloading them first.

Is there an extension (XXXXX.indd) for the file, if not rename the file and put the extension.

A couple of hints, if they don't work we'll try even harder to help you.

I've tried opening from within both Indesign Cs & CS2 in Cs it crashes instantly still and in CS2 it now says cannot open the file. I've checked and have all the current updates for both versions and I've checked the file and it does have aan extension name. I've tried rebnaming a copy but that hasn't worked either. Thanks for your help to date it is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure of this, but am wondering if having both CS and CS2 active could be causing problems especially if CS2 is an upgrade, rather than full, version. For instance, are preferences called the same thing for both versions. Are settings? I don't know since I'm on CS.

Of course the file could simply be corrupted and, without a backup version, could require redoing. Also, files often get corrupted on crashes, of which you've had many.

If possible, try moving the file to a different machine, with only one version of ID on it and see if it opens.

maybe something happened with the carrier the files were put on?

maybe ask for a second copy. If it is possible they should create an Interchange document. (File > export > (choose Interchange) and export it.

By the way are you on windows or mac?

Ask if they used a third party plugin, if you don't have the plugin sometimes that can cause crashes

we keep on thinking with you
