Take a look at faq184-5641. This wil give you one suggestion for dealing with corruption, but it won't cover every case.
As for how to detect the corruption, I know you are considering upgrading to VFP 9.0. If you do, you can use error-trapping, that is, you can wrap your USE statement in a TRY / CATCH / ENDTRY.
