corrupt characters when sending via iNotes

When we send a message to any external email address using iNotes, some special characters are corrupted.
e.g. £ is shown as =A3
This could have been happening for ever but I doubt it and suspect that it was when we upgraded our servers from 6.0.1 to 6.0.3 a few months ago.
Running Domino on iSeries, OS400 V5R2M0

Anyone had similer experience?
