Yesterday when I tried to uninstall a program I found that clicking on Add/Remove Programs caused Notepad to pop up with an error message "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Other control panel items work so I suspect a corrupt registry value but haven't a clue as to where to look.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Jaycral

Hi Jaycral,

Windows Add/Remove Programs registry keys are located in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\

There will be a Display Name (same as in Add/Remove Programs), and an Uninstall String (the path to the uninstall program).

It could be an orphaned program, removing the key will remove the entry from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

Hope that helps,
Phil

Phil,

Thanks for your reply.

I reloaded Service Pack 4 and the problem went away. Don't ask me why but what ever works is OK by me.

If it happens again I will know where to look in the registry thanks to you.

Cheers, Jaycral
