Hi ya'll,

Does anyone know if there is a way to convert CorelDraw Version 8.0 into a format that Indesign CS can use?

My employer is switching software types because other members of a consortium he belongs to are using Indesign. All his files are written in CorelDraw 8.0 suite and there are hundreds of files!!

Is there anything I could use to convert from Vector to Raster without a high percentage of data lost in the conversion?

Currently, Coreldraw 8.0 suite sits on a Win98SE box, but all the other systems or W2K or XP Pro.

Is my employer in a pickle over this??

Well, you're talking about two different apps that do two different things. Draw is an illustration app, InDesign is a page layout app. While Draw can do *some* page layout things, in its heart it's still a tool for the creation of art. InDesign is not an application for creating logos, art, etc. It's pretty much just for page layout use. Is your employer aware of that?

Now why would you want to convert vector to raster? As you mentioned, yes, you will lose data when converting - no way to get around that.

You could save things out as EPS and then use a placeable filter when importing it into Indy.

Well,

Here's the story. My predecessor was a graphics/layout dude when it came to doing flyers/catalog for my employer.

When he resigned, my employer felt it best to replace him with a System Administrator (me) instead of another Graphics/layout person.

Now the consortium that my employer belongs to is switching from whatever they use to Indesign, but my employers stuff was all done in Corel Version 8, and well, there is not one crrently on staff that knows Corel nor do any of use have that Corel program (disc 1 is missing).

Most of the art was done as .tif(s) so we could just reuse those, but any of the layout stuff was down as either .cdr or .cpt files.

Does anyone know the utilities that are in the lastest version that might be used to export these files into a usable type for Indesign CS by adobe?

Thanking all in advance.

has a script which allows cut and paste from Draw to Illustrator CS. I don't know if this works with Draw 8 also this is not a batch utility so each file would need doing.

It's late and I'm tired, so may be I missed something here... but assuming you still have access to CDraw (any version), saving the CDR files as EPS is the best solution. I suppose each file will have to be opened up individually to do so, but the EPS files will certainly be able to be placed in InDesign.

As for the CPT files from Photopaint, the most versatile format for these are TIFs.

Thanks so much for the tips! I'll try it as sson as my employer commits to the software purchase.
