CorelDRAW 10 suddenly won't load...

I'm suddenly having problems opening CorelDRAW (10). I get a "CORELDRW caused an invalid page fault in module MFC42.DLL at 0187:5f405042" message just as the program's loading and loading then halts. I tried re-installing but then I get a "Error 1324.The path Corel\DRAW contains an invalid character" at about 60% of the installation process and installation is cancelled. It doesn't specify what the invalid character is, but I can't see anything invalid in the path. Uninstalling also spits out an equally cryptic error message and the uninstallation process is cancelled. The other programs in the suite (PhotoPaint & R.A.V.E.) work normally. I'm stuck. I can't uninstall or re-install, which is always the last resort. So now what...?

I managed to resolve the issue by using a third-party uninstaller to remove each application in the CorelDRAW Suite one at a time, as the Corel uninstall program would not function (see above). However I still got the same error message when I tried to reinstall CorelDRAW once again. I then spent more than an hour going through the registry and manuallly removing all the references to CorelDRAW I could find (the uninstaller apparently missed many of them). I then did a search of my hard drive to find any other data files that refered to CorelDRAW that were still hangin' around and turned up a folder in my Windows directory where Corel stores all the install/uninstall and directory info. Once I deleted that folder as well, the program was finally able to be reinstated cleanly and is now functioning properly. Whew, that was work. Hope I don't have to go through that again, but you know computers...always something.

One thing you migth want to consider if anything like this happens in the future is to delete all windows temp files after the uninstall and then a scan disk/defrag and reboot before the reinstall. Also, make sure that it is not a bad font causing the app not to open.. some TT fonts of the free type can be quite fishy and will play havoc on your apps. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

This problem suddenly started running CD 10 on XP Pro, after more than a month with no problems. I have tried everything you suggested, plus uninstalled all fonts other than basic Windows, and still no joy. Did you ever find out what causes this?

I have not encountered this problem myself... it sems that XP is the common thread, tho. It can't hurt to visit MicroSloth's website and make sure you have all updates and current service packs installed.

Are you installing to the default path or did you make your own directory? If so.. how many characters are in the path name? Just pulling at straws here... but if you have any extremely long file names, I have seen problems with other apps upon install...

Best place for answers may be Corel's News Group.. these guys are all hard core! Point your news reader to cnews.corel.ca, then select corel.graphic_apps.draw10

hope this helps When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
