Now and again when trying to open a file in Corel Draw X3, as soon as you select the file to open, it just hangs there and freezes, and you have to end task to close the program down.

The file isnt even a big file, ie 300k!!!

If you then look at the Task Manager it shows not responding.

It doesnt do it on every file either, just now and again.

anyone got any ideas what this could be?

Just incase its needed, the PC is running windows 2000.

I can only make some guesses which might narrow the problem down.

Is the file on a network drive? In which case, try moving the file to a local drive first.

Is there plenty of free space on the hard drive?

Try uninstalling any programs or windows features you don't need.

Will it let you run task manager:processes when the problem occurs, to see:

a) which task is using most CPU time (click on the CPU heading twice to bring the "heavy" task to the top)

b) go to view : select columns and ensure CPU time, memory usage, user name and Virtual Memory Size are on.

c) for each of these columns, sort for the highest and note the process and its value.

The files are on network drives and have to be really.. but its hard to replicate the problem as it only happens whenever it wants, so we cant test if it fixes the issue by copying to a hard drive.

Theres 27gb free on the C: drive too :s

When the program crashes we can run task manager and view the processes and it usually shows 99% cpu usage and the most memory allocated is to Corel. and the program is not responding so we have to kill it.

This only happens now and again though, the file could be happily running for ages then suddenly will just do this.

I'm not sure but I think by default Corel will try to make autobackups and work files on the same drive as the current document. So it may be more important how much free space is on the network drive.

If you can't copy the file to the local drive, you might try temporarily turning autobackup off. Many times I've seen Corel hang at times that seem to coincide with autobackup and I've noticed it more with large files on network drives.
