Corel and Word conversion issues

We have files created in Word Perfect that have been converted to Word 2002. When I open the .doc in Word on my own computer (or any computer without Word Perfect) some of the characters are incorrect such as ' appears as =. However if I open the file in Word on a computer with Word Perfect installed the characters appear normal. I even went as far as installing Word Perfect on my machine...everything looked great. As soon as I removed it I went back to seeing the "bad" characters.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
