When saving in CorelDRAW11 I often encounter the following message when working with a drawing with many objects, layers, transparencies etc.:

File Copy Error. TEMP drive or output drive may be full.

The only way out of the situation is to save in CMX format and hope for the best, or to shut down and start from the last save point, knowing that the drawing is no longer workable in CorelDRAW11 and saving in v.10 format on reopening. Service Pack 1 is installed. I have both CorelDRAW 10 and 11 installed on my machine.

My TEMP location is set to my local hard drive with 30Gb free and the output drive is a 400Gb server!

Upgrading to CorelDRAW 11 appears to have been a waste of money!

I don't use V11 (V10) and have never had this problem, however this question appears very often on the Corel NG with no definate answer although factors such as 1G of ram, saving to servers have all been mentioned. I suspect that if you were to convert tranparancy effects to bitmaps as opposed to an effect on a vector that this may 'ease' the problem.

I currently use version 8 and have encountered the same problem. I lost several files this way! Once the file starts to save and then errors out, the saved version becomes corrupted, too. I've had to go back to an earlier version of the auto backup file.

I have found that each time I've had the problem it's because Draw is having a problem with some graphic or other on the page. Somehow, someway, I don't know. By trial and error I delete a graphic then try to save again. Every time I've tried this klunky workaround I've had success.

Reintroducing the offending graphic led to the same problem, so I learned to re-edit/resave it in PP and then all works great. I was beginning to wonder if the problem weren't more with the save/export from PP?

Maybe I DO like paddling with a wooden spoon. ;-)

Hi, I work for as pretty large company with around 20 - 30 Corel11 users, I was writing some training schemes and fixes for the BUGS in corel and thought i might as well share them with..

The TEMP ERROR problem is usually solved by one of these... Trust me they work 80-90% of the time... Although the instances of this happening do seem to be reduced by a good configuration of corel - ie optimize the memory settings etc.

Work-around once the error has occurred:

DO NOT TRY TO RESAVE OVER THE ORGINAL (ONLY USE SAVE AS) DOCUMENT OR SHUT DOWN COREL. ONLY TRY THESE SOLUTIONS IN THEIR ORDER OF APPERANCE!!! (this will delete your 'BACKUP_OF' file)

1. If Image files are contained in the drawing, convert them to CMYK, then to RGB and back. This can be done by selecting the image, bitmaps > Mode > ... Try to save as. (ONLY). If this doesn't work try the next point.

2. Open a fresh copy of CoreDraw11 (leaving the original open) and Drag & Drop all of the drawing into the new CorelDraw11 window. Try to save as. (ONLY).If this doesn't work try the next point.

3.Keep CorelDraw11 open, then using Windows Explorer, browse to the directory where your file is stored.

From the Explorer Menu select TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW TAB select the option “show hidden files and folders” and uncheck the option “Hide file extensions for known file types” Click ‘APPLY’ and ‘OK’.
In the directory where your file is stored look for filenames beginning with ~, and ending in .TMP. Make a copy of any files you find.

Then rename the file extensions of your copies to .CDR. These files should contain versions of your document. OPEN THEM FIRST IN A NEW INSTANCE OF CORELDRAW; DO NOT CLOSE THE ORIGINAL UNLESS ALL INFORMATION IS INTACT! If this doesn't work try the next point.

4. Select the entire drawing and Drag & Drop into the desktop or folder on your computer (not Network) - Thus creating a scrap file, it has no layers but it better than loosing the lot!!! This file can then be opened in CorelDraw11 as a backup.

Its long winded but i hope it helps!! :)

I had the same problem using Corel Draw 9 in XP. I solved it by increasing the amount of windows virtual memory.

May be of use
