Copying VHS video to Intel iMac

Hi Guys

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what hardware and software is needed to copy old home VHS videos to my Intel iMac and then being imported into iMovie?
Any help would be appreciated

Whilst it won't play your tapes, the current 250+ looks a neat solution, with the added benefit of digital and analogue TV reception and software to make your make a PVR. It's on the AppleStore at $199 and Amazon for $177.

I have a second hand elgato eye 200 for over a year, which allows me to watch analog TV and convert video, and it's been very good.

Thanks mrn and drlex for the suggestions.
What I was hoping to find is a device (under $100) to plug into my VCR and record and store maybe an hour or so of video in 10 or 15 minute files which I could then import into iMovie or iDVD and burn from there.

There used to be a few hardware converters (Canopus ADVC55, Miglia Director's cut) aimed at the home user, but the development of cheap TV tuner/convertors seems to have rendered them obsolete. I note that the Canopus is over $200 on Amazon.

If you have (or can borrow) an appropriate camcorder, many have a pass-through function that will allow you to use the camcorder to encode an analogue input and send it on to the Mac.

Otherwise, if it's just a one-off, how about buying something appropriate from craigs' list/ebay and selling it on after or getting a video conversion service to do it for you?
