Copying VHS to DVD-RW

Does anyone know if its possible to use an internal DVD-RW driver to create a universal-ish format DVD recording from a standard VHS tape player? I have some precious home movies I want to copy to DVD before the tape wears out through overplaying!

How would I connect the player to the PC/drive?

Would I need to disable macrovision? Where can I get macrovision disablers from?

Don't know anything about DVD burners but I'm assuming you're going to have to find some video feed to your graphics card.

Yes you can m8, you will need a graphics card with TV IN. I have an ALL IN WONDER RADEON card that has TV IN/OUT on it, I use a scart lead with composite connectors to link with the TV card and my sound card. My TV card will record in most formats including MPEG1/2. My Pacific DVD player with play the DVD-R+R CD/r CD/rw. I use it to record Sky direct to my Hard Disk, obvouisly If I play a tape in the player I can record that as well. If you live in the UK you can post me the Video Tapes and I'll do them for you.

The answer is of course to install a video card that accepts incoming video. Depending on the card and software that comes with it, that should be all you need to get it into MPEG-2 format. Then you would simply use a Nero or Roxio DVD burning app to put it on a working DVD.

The other part of your problem dealing with macrovision is a different issue. If you are trying to copy commercial VHS (not "home" VHS), then we will not be discussing that here. It's inappropriate.

Home VHS shouldn't be a problem, since macrovision isn't used.

You can also get some packages like one sold by Pinnacle (Studio Moviebox USB), which include an UBS2.0 external device that has an MPEG2 encoder and allows to get the video from your VHS and record it directly to the PC in MPG format. Then they supply the software to edit (very nice software) the digital video files and produce DVDs.
