Can Rm/Cobol-85 Files be copied back and forth from a Unix box RS6000 to a Windows 98/NT Computer.

Basically the files are Data Files. Could they get corrupted? I would be using Power Term FTP Terminal Emulator or Windows Explorer through a Network.

Thank You

Paul

Hi,
If the files were created under RM-Cobol as "line sequential", you will be able to use dos copy utilities on the unix side to copy to the PC format (hex 0d0a end-of-record) or copy back to the unix format (hex 0a end-of-record). Hope this helps.

I think I speak with some authority on this one.[smarty]

RM/COBOL data files are totally portable between different machine architectures. When you are using ftp to move the files, be sure to use binary mode.

You may wish to use ascii (A) mode for files that are line sequential (that is, text files). RM/COBOL treats each cluster of delimiters (x'0A', x'0D', x'0C') as a single record termination, but other text handling software (i.e. text editors) may not be so forgiving.

You also do not need to recompile your programs to move an application since RM/COBOL object files are also portable. You may move RM/COBOL object files with a binary ftp.
