Copying files and getting out of resources??

I have a 6TB disk array attached to a 2003 enterprise server with dual quad core processors and 16 gigs of ram. I am trying to copy about 100 gigs of data to the attached storage but I keep getting Cannot copy files not enough resources. I initially thought it might be a swap file issue so I created a swap file for that array and am still getting the error. It is weird because I can copy some files even after the error but once in a while I get the error. It doesnt seem to be file specific, although one file I am trying to move is about 50 gigs (database dump file) but as beefy as this server is, it should MORE than handle anything I throw at it.

I've got nothing running or installed to take up resources. It is JUST the server and OS. Any ideas?

Cheers
Rob

How are you trying to copy the files?

I do a UNC to another server and just copy or cut and paste to a folder on the 6TB drive. I was using Robocopy for a while but I think this error kills it so I stopped. It is just strange that it'll go for a while then stop, goes for a while then stops.

I am thinking it might be some weird limitation within Windows, I can't believe its hardware related. It is formated as a dynamic disk and the OS sees it ok and like I said I can copy some files. But I'll grab a folder with like 75 gigs in it and try to copy it and it gets a few minutes into the copy and I get the out of resources error.

I mean, the whole Terrabyte concept is relatively new for Windows, especially 2003 so I am just curious if there are any limitations to it.

Thanks for any help!

Cut and paste is ridiculously slow. I think you had the right idea in regards to using robocopy, but you have to bare in mind such large file/folder copies you will need adequate memory and swap space since you are experiencing issues with resources.
I would recommend that you let the system define the amount of pagefile space you are using instead of setting it to a finite level.
Hope this helps.

I agree. Robocopy will be the way to go. I second itsp1965's pagefile suggestion.

I actually did let Windows set the swap file size for that drive, there are also two partitions of internal drives (a 25 gig OS partition and a 650 gig partition) which I set the swap to let Windows decide what to use for each of those. Same error.

Most of the files aren't large in fact most are under a 1 gig. It is just a lot of them. The 75 gig folder I was moving was mostly PST files and documents. It is just stuff that we need to keep but don't need to access every day (or even every month or year sometimes)

It is a Dell server and a Dell array so I am gonna give them a call tomorrow and see if they have any idea.

Thanks for the help!

If you are having resource error, I would recommend you start your copy after a fresh reboot of the server and if possible disable as many apps as possible (if possible)
Start a robocopy session and leave your task manager open, monitor the amount of memory/pagefile that is being used up during the copy process.

Actually I think I found the problem as explained here I knew I should have installed the 64 bit OS. I added the PAE bit to the boot.ini file but I cant reboot till I my back up to tape is done. Another couple of hours. It's about the only thing that really makes sense so I am hoping this fixes it. Thanks for the help!

After adding the PAE and 3gb switch to the Boot.ini file I was able to copy a lot of large files with no issues.

Thanks again for any help!
