Copying Fields in an Access Form

I have an Access 2000 form which runs off of a query. Often times, a series of records will be very similar with only one field differing. I'd like to copy the last record entered and then edit the one field that will vary. This field that I'm trying to edit, along with the record ID, comprises the primary field, so I know Access won't accept a duplicate. When I click the Duplicate Record Command key that I added to the form, Access appears to duplicate the record on screen (the record counter increases by one). When I then try to go to the unique field to edit it, Access gives me a message saying that what I'm doing will create a duplicate value in the primary field and that I should edit the field, which is what I'm trying to do. Each time I try to make the change, I get the same message.

I've encountered this quite frequently in the past and would love to know the reason for it and the solution.

Thanks,
Peter
