Hello folks

For years, when I copy a drawn line in Excel, I select the cell to paste it in and it appears several cells away from the selection.

The only real way around this is to put the line, circle etc in cell A1. When copying and pasting it from there, the drawn line appears in the selected cell. However, this is not much use when I want to paste lines/ovals etc of different colours.

As you can see from this screen shot:

there is a direct correlation between the origin and the destination, which is why I have used A1 to prevent this.

Can anyone tell me how I may paste a drawn object in the destination cell without it ending up several cells away, please?

Thanks!

Hi,

I cannot duplicate what you describe.

The upper-left hand corner of the shape always appears with the same relative distance from the upper-left hand corner of the selected cell when pasted.

Hmmm, what I want to happen is for the line/shape to appear in the destination cell as selected, not several cells away from it.

Here you can see that when I select a cell, right-click>Paste, the line is copied to a completely different cell.

I would like the line to be pasted into the cell that has been selected, not elsewhere.

Thanks

Try Selecting the cell you want to start drawing the line in. THEN add the line, etc.

I get either the paste that you are experiencing OR a paste in the selected cell, but I have not yet figgured out how to predict with certainty.

It seems that most of the time the COPY is with respect to the TOP and LEFT of the SHEET and then the PASTE has the same offset with respect to the Selected CELL.

But try this...
Add the line within ONE CELL
COPY the CELL

PASTE and see what happens.

I just drew a line in a cell (I used the Line button from the Drawing toolbar). Click off to make sure it was in the cell. I then clicked back on the line. You Should see the selection squares on the lines endpoints. Then I copied. Clicked in a different cell. Clicked paste. A perfect duplicate appeared.

Did noticed that if I go to Tools - Options and deselect Cut,Copy, and Sort Objects with Cells under the Edit tab, I also got strange behavior.

Check that option. REDRAW the line and go through the copy process again and see if anything changes.

Oh, man! Thanks very much indeed. Why did I not try to copy the cell?????

That is the solution. I can't believe that I've spent so long doing it incorrectly.

You each have my gratitude.
