I am a relative newocmer to Access, so please bear wth any seemingly retarded questions. I am trying to make a copy of a database that has many linked tables. The copy needs to be completely unlinked from the original, but retain all of the original functionality.

Basically, I need to make a copy of the database to mess around with, and keep the original untouched in the meantime.

Do i do this by importing the original tables? How can i be certain that the links will remian intact within the database, but that any alterations to the copy won't affect the original?

thanks,

MJ

Using Windows Explorer just highligh the database and from the Edit menu or a right click of the mouse select Copy. Now select Paste and the database is copied. The name will be Copy of DatabaseName.mdb Rename this to whatever you want. This copy is now a duplicate and any changes that you make here will have no effect on the original.

<sorry for being a pain>

and that will make sure that all of the correct table linking will remain intact? i won't affect my original database in the slightest?

I was under the impression that your suggestions would work for a regular database, but not when there are a lot of table linking and sql queries being run. I thought that linking made tables reference originals?

The database will be completely identical. Linkeages to other databases will be the same. Queries will be exactly the same. If you want to verify the linking aspects try using the Link Table Manager while in each databae and see the paths that are associated with each linked database. They both be pointing to the same locations.
