(or "burn" it to a memory stick) and boot from that. You may be able to boot through to your laptop, or else be able to retrieve the complete data directory of the MySQL installation on it.

If the new MySQL installation is newer than the old one, it might run OK but not support new features. In that case, the "mysql" needs to be updated with a script. See the upgrading section in the manual.
