copper shim CPU Protector 1

I have an AMD Athalon processor, and the heatsink came with a copper shim CPU protector. The picture on their website shows it fitting perfectly onto the processor around the little circular pads(?) on the corners. Mine is not a perfect fit, not really even close. I could make it fit, but that I'd assume would be bad. Can this piece be left out? I have an athalon xp 1700 with a heat sink and silicon thermal compound. Would that be sufficient? Thanks,

it can be left out, no big deal, it just helps to seat the heatsink flush with the CPU die, and some people think this improves cooling by quite a fair bit, but I've not noticed it too much, and it should be OK to leave it off... and I would not recommend "making" it fit... copper shims could easily short out a processor if it contacted the electronics on top of this. If it doesn't fit, it's the wrong piece, make sure you've got it on the right direction though The weevil of doooooooooom

A shim on an AMD XP CPU is completely unnecessary and known to actually caused the CPU to run a little warmer (only slightly) don't worry leave it out.
