Hi,

I am seeking advice as to what and how to keep my computer system cooler than it already is... Right now, my cpu is at 56 and my motherboard is 37 degress. I am running a AMD ahtlon XP 2000+. Right now I have normal fans, but I am looking to purchase thermal fans.

Even though you have just an XP2000+ and not the top-end 3200+, you might have one of the hottest Athlon's made. If your cpu is green in color, then you have the older Polamino core and those cpu's ran quite hot. The older possibility is brown in color, which is the thoroughbred core, and puts out significantly less heat. What I'm saying is, if you have a green XP2000+, it's going to be pretty hot no matter what you do.

I've gone from a 7200rpm thermaltake orb to a 5400rpm orb to a 3400rpm coolerjag always getting ~55-60C. Now I've got a Zalman 1500rpm heatsink/fan & getting ~45C on a 2500+. A lot of it really is the heatsink/fan combo on top of the cpu rather than the number of case fans. Tomshardware & others have done some cooler reviews, here's one page:

Also pick up some arctic silver 5 if you don't have some already - it's a super-easy way to drop a couple degrees off any setup without adding any noise.

Of course, if you were really insane, you could do this: =)

Your temperatures are a dead givaway for bad heatsink cooler performance, with nearly 20C differance between CPU and case temps, clearly indicating dramatic improvement is possible with a better performing cooler.
I find as a general rule if the cooler is doing a good job differances between these two figures are less than 10 degrees C.
That would bring your CPU down under 50C and about right for an XP2.0+
Thermal fans are not going to improve your figures, if anything they may be worse, these fans are designed to speed up the hotter the air temp gets but are no more powerful than standard units infact generally they have a low CFM rating.
They are ideal for those of us who want to keep the noise down because when idling they are extremely quiet.

A cheap/quiet replacent heatsink/fan unit would be Arctic Coolers Copper Silent 2 at around $17?? £10UK with better than OEM performance at under 20db.
