COOKIES If cookie exists then goto url else goto this url

Yeah I have tried a few things but i cant figure it out.
I thought i could write a small piece of java at the head of my page to check cookie but im not to hot at java.
Then i thought i could write a cgi script to check cookie this u can do but i dont know how to get pass which page i want to go to to this script and then how to pass the info back to the page once the cookkie has been validated.
CANT SEE WOOD FOR TREES
Any suggestions or code fragments that might be able to help me
