Alright I got a good one for you. My brother-in-law has a new video camera that records into .WMV format and he wants to burn it to a DVD in DVD-R format so that he can watch it on his DVD player. I have tried Adobe Premiere 6.5 but it will not even open the file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually no. DVD [red]-[/red] R is slightly more compatible with 92% vs. 87%. When it comes to the RW format, both "+" and "-" are pretty equal. Here's a site that has tallied several thousand set-top DVD players and shows the stats:

rhm54,
You need to find a way to convert the file into either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 format. MPEG-1 is for VCD and MPEG-2 is for DVD or SVCD.

Search the net for an encoder that will make the conversion.

Once you are able to convert it, there are some free tools and tutorials at this site:

NOktar,
TMPGEnc is great when dealing with MPEG-1, MPEG-2, or AVI files. However, it doesn't help you if you start with a WMV encoded file, which is the problem that rhm54 is facing.

I use Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator. Drag-and-drop of just about ANY video file (I've done WMV's, MPG, AVI, and even Divx!) Plus, you get animated menus and playlists, etc.

Now, before I get flamed, it's not tweakable. You get what you get, you can't make your own animated menus and so forth, but for ease of use, it really can't be beat.

p.s. I reviewed this product on EPinions

oss media converter or oss video converter should access .wmv

gbaughma,
I haven't yet had a chance to try out Roxio's 6.0 version yet, so I'm glad to hear that it can also handle WMV and AVI. That's great!

If the camera has firewire output, Adobe should be able to capture the video from that assuming, of course, that you have a firewire port.
