converting to spot color

ok, this seems like it should be easy and is something I should know:
converting to PMS spot colors- is there a process or function? Or is it just 'select an object then click on PMS swatch that matches'? I hope not the latter, as it is difficult to color-match when one is color blind...

did it using Photoshop:
for anyone who cares, eyedropper the color, click on the color on the toolbar and when the 'color picker' opens, select the appropriate PMS setting under 'color libraries' and it shows it.
basic stuff, but I've allowed myself to get rusty, so it was a whole bunch of fumbling around before I stumbled onto the right track
