I have AI at work, when design files (.DXF .EPS .AI) come in by email, I open them up and convert them to .PDF's and then forward them to whoever couldn't open them. I do this by going "save as copy" and selecting .PDF as the file type. Sometimes this doesn't work, when I get a file and save it as .PDF, I get the .PDF but when I open .PDF all I can see is a blank page. I've shrunk design file to fit within the print bounding box, and changed the print orientation to match the dimensions of the design files. But I don't know why SOME file just give me a blank .PDF?

Any suggestions??

I find that saving to PDFs from Illustrator can be a little bit of trial and error. Ungrouping objects and getting rid of unnecessary clipping masks seems to help, although I don't really know why!

Hope this helps!

Yes, the earlier versions of .pdf were a bit clugie (cloo-jee). I have better results the newer the version I save under. I think its partly what blueark said and the way the newer versions of .ai creates tranparancy effects. DXF's usually come from CAD programs which create extremely long paths so simplifing may be all you need to do. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
