Does anyone know how to convert terminal server from an application server to a file server and what are the risks?

You can use terminal server as a file server also. As far as I know, it can run almost the same services as a regular NT server(ie.. Wins,DHCP,Backup Software...). If you want to just make it a NT 4 regular server, then you will need to install NT4 again.

It's not adviseable to do both - Terminal Services require a lot of horsepower.

You can just stop the Terminal Service to convert it into a Fileserver.

This way, if you decide you want your T/S back at any point in time, just start the service again (but move data to another server first ;-))

DeanSpencer, NT 4.0 was avaiable in a psecial version called Terminal Server Edition (TSE). You cannot add terminal services to an NT4 server like you can to a Win2K server.

Hope this answers your question... - Bill

Voyager1, this is what I was trying to get across to citrixengineer, read his post above mine.

I may have misread - I initially understood the question as "Can you change a T/S into a F/S?".

...but it's the other way around, isn't it?

Which isn't possible with NT4, but is with W2k - you can add the Terminal Services later, should you wish.
