I am wondering if it is possible to convert existing Quark 4.2 files into InDesign CS-2??? I am not up and running, but need to know before I proceed. Any feedback would be great! Thanks!

Yes...InDesign will natively convert QXP 3 and 4 files. Just open InDesign, choose Open from the File menu and choose the Quark files.

You will probably have to do a little tweaking to the document afterwards...if you have lots of text, you will get reflow. Also, sometimes the leading values are different and graphics might come through with Non-Printing attributes attached and you'll just have to make them not Non-Printing.

Other than that, the process is pretty smooth. I generally make EPS files of the Quark pages so I have a template of what the files should look like for comparison.

Oh, thank you! You'd be surprised at how hard that information was for me to find!!! Adobe suggested some sort of Plug-in was necessary, but their link proved to be a dead-end!

One more question... Most of my files are in Quark 4.2, however, I have a client that is going to supply me with a Quark 6.2 file for me to revise. Do you happen to have any experience with converting a higher version of Quark into InDesign? Thanks, again for your information!!! Very helpful!!!

Yes, the Markzware plugin is necessary for converting QXP versions 5 or 6 (it won't do 7 as of right now). I use the plugin and it does a better job of conversion that the out-of-the-box conversion in InDesign.

The other option is to have the client save down to QXP version 4. The two biggest drawbacks of this are: you have to go from v.6 to v. 5, then v.5 to v.4; and you risk losing info or getting undesirable results from so much backwards conversion.

If you're going to be getting lots of files in lots of different formats, the plug in is the way to go!
