Hi,

I am trying to help someone access his email from an Outlook .pst archive. He thinks it was Outlook XP. I have only Outlook Express and when I select import from Outlook, it says "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client." It does not allow you to point to an archive for import.

I tried to find conversion tools to get the .pst file into .msg or .eml or unix mbox format. All of the conversion tools I found can not directly read .pst files, they require Outlook installed on the computer to use as an OLE Jet server. I tried looking on MS's download page to download Outlook XP for this, but I couldn't find it.

Does anyone know of free or cheap software or method to convert .pst files without Outlook? Or does anyone know if Outlook XP is available to download from MS to use as an intermediary, and where to find it on MS's website?

Thanks, Colin.

If you can work with *.msg file format you can do this:

You should use the "drag & Drop" feature. Resize the OL window and create a folder(i.e. in MyDocuments or?) to receive them & open it. Arrange so that you can select drag from OL to the receiving window.
Select using shift for contigous groups or Ctrl for non contigous groups drag them to the folder created. You will find that they have been copied as individual files and are *.msg format.

Caveat: If some files are titled identically on separate moves you could overwrite the existing msg.

Hope you find this helpful

Its one of the conversion utilities I tried and unfortunately it requires Outlook be installed.

If I understand you correctly, Outlook must be installed because you are dragging from the Outlook window to an Explorer window. My problem is I do not have Outlook XP. Do you know if its available from Microsoft as a free download, or what you have to buy to get it at the retail level?

Thanks, Colin.
