Converting Mac Mail files to Linux?

I've used Macs forever and all my past emails, both business and personal, are in Mac Mail (emlx) format. I won't be buying another Mac (too expensive), and I've decided to use Linux Mint from now on. But the downside is those past emails. I've got a mail "converter" program, but it simply reformats Mac Mail files into "plain text", which is awful looking and any pictures in those emails are lost.

The only "solution" I've found is to forward each message on the Mac to myself and download it again under Linux (Thunderbird). But with hundreds of them, I'd be at this forever. Has anyone made this trip?

ther is probably an easier way but setting up an imap server on the linux box is one option (dovecot is common)
you can then add this as an account on the mac & then use the mac mail client to move the mail from one mailbox to the other.

I've never tried to do this, myself, but sounded interesting, so thought I'd look:

There, I found this one (paid app):

It converts to a format useful for the Linux email program, Evolution, which works similar to Microsoft Outlook.

When I searched for the same thing, but replaced Evolution with Thunderbird, I found this (couple links down):

Again, not sure, just thought one might float yer boat. [wink]

Some of the above was helpful. Thanks. I finally succeeded by doing this:

1. Get the Mac version of Thunderbird and import all email messages and folders from Mac Mail. They will be imported as mbox files, even though Mac Mail stores them in emlx format.

2. Go to the Thunderbird support files on the Mac ~/Library/Thunderbird/profiles/default/mail/local folders

3. Copy the selected folders to a USB: "family letters", or "contracts 2010", or "name that subject." Each icon here is a folder; don't copy the "msf" folders--they'll be created automatically when you paste this into Linux Thunderbird.

4. Go to the Linux box and find the Thunderbird folder (you need to "show hidden files" under "View" in the Nautilus window):
~/.thunderbird/chbaj7cg.default/mail/local folders

This is where you paste the contents of your USB drive--the email folders/files. After that's done, launch Thunderbird and all your folders and files--in their original format and with all their contents--are there. YAY!
