Converting from DreamWeaver to FrontPage

Hi All,

I am trying to help a friend of mine out with web maintenance and the last person to work on it was a DreamWeaver user. Consequently, I cannot see all of the htm pages or graphics or anything that normally come down from a website when you do an import from a URL. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get the various htm and images visible in the project explorer?

But can you "view source" and copy and past the code in the FP?

Then can you right click and get any pics?

Yes, I have attempted this but I get a lot of java script errors, and was hoping there was something a little more point and click. If not then I can pull the source into FP and hand edit. Just trying to avoid that.

Can we see the url of the site?
Is the site still hosted in the same place? Does it have FPSE (FrontPage Server Extensions) enabled on the server?
Are you using FP03? Was the site made with a Dynamic web template (dwt) in dw?

What is project explorer?

If we can see the site it's much easier to help.

The history of the site is this. It was first done in FrontPage. Afew months ago, a lady took it over and all she had to work with was DW. I have talked with her and she said it was a pain to get it from FP to DW. She is no longer able to work on the site so I was asked if I could help out. All I have available is FP2000 right now, but will be upgrading soon. As far as the FP extensions, I do not know if they are enabled on the server. I will have to call the ISP hosting and ask. Oh dear ... do you realise this site is doing some bad SEO? It has keywords across the top set to not display ... but the search engines can see it, this is something they frown on hugely and probably why you only have a PR (page rank) of 1/10 in google ... which is not the be all and end all of seo .. but it is a rough guide .. certainly doing black seo methods will seriously damage your standing in any search engine.

There are numerous unnessary scripts going on whith a lot of stuff that is just eye candy and not needed.. when you have a business or information site ... you don't need a lot of flickering moving stuff going on .... the bright colours all clash and the page load is enormous at 1.19...

You seriously need to think about ... waiting till you get fp03 if your going to upgrade and make a new template .. make it a dwt (dynamic web template) use includes for menus and make another css sheet ... drop the black hat seo methods and I bet you will watch your standing go way up in the se's.

When I pulled the site into fp .. it did not ask me for a user name and pw .. I'd look into that.

If you have fpse on the server you can open the site live and just publish it back to your hd, however I don't think it does .. which does not mean that does not have them available.. they just need enabling.. ask the host.

From what I can see of the code ... the movement from dw and fp back and forth is no problem ... it's the js that is the problem..I see what you mean about import ...

What ftping the site back to your hd? ... The owner should have the information for login and pw.

of course you can get the site page by page and graphic by graphic ... but that would be a bit of a nightmare.

I usually can open a site and pull it directly to my hard drive, but as you saw, it does not do that here. What exactly is a fpse, and what should I be asking the host for when I call them? I will need to work on the site prior to me being able to get FP03. Really just updating some of the PDF's that are out there. But I am planning to streamline the page action.

Now, I know nothing about the SOE or what it is. I understand what you mean by the hidden keywords, but I have heard that this is a technique employed to increase the chances of the page showing up in Google or Yahoo searches. If not this technique, what is better?

It's a technique alright but one that will get the site banned in most search engines, it's black hat SEO, you simply don't do it.

If the host does not have fpse on the server, and if she was using dw she would have been using ftp... simply ask for the username and password and dl it, or make a free site on tripod with fpse turned off ask her to put it there for you, then turn the fpse on and open it live and publish it to your hd.
