SET EXCLUSIVE OFF is particularly important with earlier versions of DBASE that didn't have the SHARED keyword. (SHARED is the keyword in Visual FoxPro.) For example, DBASE for DOS version 5.0 from back in 1995 didn't have it.

And when you open a table that needs to be shared, don't use the EXCLUSIVE keyword.

Best practices is for you to open a table NOUPDATE if you won't be editing any parts of the table or related indexes.
