I'm trying to convert a 20Mb .avi file to a .wmv file. It's a screen capture with spoken commentary and the specs for the avi are:

Audio: Rate: 22.050 kHz Sample: 16 bit Channels: mono Format: PCM
Video: 1024 x 768 Frames: 2498 Rate: 15 Frames per sec Format: Microsoft Video 1

I'm converting it into a .wmv file using Microsoft Media Encoder 7, I've tried the following settings:

The default "Screen capture for modems (28.8Kbps)",
Audio: Codec: ACELP.net Format: 5 K bit/s 8000Hz mono
Video: Codec: Windows media screen 7

With this the video side is ok but the audio is crap. I've tried other settings but I can't seem to improve the audio, or if I get the audio to work the video doesn't! Any help on the best settings to use would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks!

hi Philip hrrm why do you need to do this? are you trying to send this out on a dial up line from a web page?
I do not know what a WMV format is? is it something to do with a product bundled with ME or something?
If you are trying to compress an avi to send it somewhere, 15 FPS is too fast to send down a 28.8k line, never mind audio as well, the maximum is probably 3FPS to include any audio. At that size! 384x268 will make good mono radio qual audio and about 8 to 10 FPS @ 28k.
One other point 'can it be coded and sent as an off line READ file in MPG1 .... I use AVI to MPG V2 by XING sucessfully ... Paul
