I have a few charts and graphs in illustrator and am trying to convert them to a format which will give the best output in Ms word. This Word file then needs to be converted into PDF for distributing to the readers. I tried converting to .jpg and also .wmf. Can someone please suggest/recommend the best format to save the charts, so as to get a good output.

Why not save your pdf directly from Illustrator (File>Save As>Choose pdf from the drop down list)?

There are a bunch of saving presets you can choose and you can save the presets from the pdf dialog.

You could also take the ai-file into Acrobat (proper, not the free reader) and have even more choices.

I can't think for the life of me why you'd want to involve MS Word in this, all it will do is mess stuff up.

Hey Bert,

Thanks for the reply. The reason I can't save it directly in PDF is that I have a lot of text involved. It is a report and I have to incorporate my summary with the graphs, and the graphs have already been made in illustrator. Any other suggestions?

I usually use "File | Export" and save it as a .tif file. Then insert it into Word.

Saving as a *.tif as Kim suggests is definitely an option, but you'll inflate file size or sacrifice resolution/image quality that way. Illustrator can handle text quite well (you can import the text from word into Illustrator).

I tried by converting to .tif format, but as you mentioned , I am losing the resolution when converting to PDF.

If you change the pdf settings to suppress downsampling when you create the pdf does that make a difference in your chart quality? I know as Itchy said, the file size will be huge but I'm wondering if it makes a difference.

dp/Kim:

The file size should not be too big unless there are rasters to downsample to begin with. If that's the case, Illustrator does indeed do a hack job saving to pdf. If it's all vector, pdf's from Illustrator are fine.

In the case of the tif export, with lzw compression it can be made a bit smaller (lossless, I might add) but you should set the resolution a bit higher to avoid choppy stuff.

Try exporting the AI files in PNG format. I have found they look - and print - a lot better when inserted into a Word document than just about any other file type, and they're usually smaller than TIFs as well.
