Hello Everybody:

Having some big problems this week with a database that was created by another (ex-employee) but given to me to cope with. This database is out on the network and used by a particular department in the organization to perform their daily activities. I am supposed to convert that database which is presently access 97 to access 2000.

I have been working on this for past 3 days and i am writing my problems and how i progressed. But i am still facing problems. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Stage 1:

When I try to convert the Database from 97 to 2000 over the server I get this message (“The current user account doesn't have permission to convert or enable the database??”). I have all the administrative privileges. But when I go to the department which is using this database and logged as administrator on their computer, I could access the database and the application they use. Is it that they are using a Windows NT system with MS ACCESS 97 version and I am using Windows XP with MS ACCESS 2000 Version. I copy and pasted the database onto my c: drive thinking maybe it was a problem with trying to do it over the network and i got the same message. I logged into my computer once using my ID and once using administrator ID, but i still get the same error.

Stage 2:

After some literature review,

I tried importing the old database and i could import all the objects except one object under "Reports". The error i got is "you dont have permission to import, export or link to 'object name'. To import, export or link to this object, you must have Read Design and Read Data permissions for it." But i continued the import process inspite of this error.

Now i have both the A97 and A2000 running on my computer. When i open the database (it is a copy of the one that is on the network) from my local machine using A97 it works fine and opens the Main Menu form and we can do particular tasks directed by the contents of the Main Menu.

But when i tried opening the new database file (which is the upgraded 2000 version of old file) it opens the contents of the database. It does not start by opening the Main Menu. But when i go to the forms and click on and open the Main Menu, the form appears. But by clicking the buttons on the form, they dont work and i get the message saying "Cannot access the file. network connection may have lost." I cannot even see the VB code fir this forms and I get the same error message.

Stage 3:

Now I finished setting the Main Menu form as the startup screen.

When i clicked the buttons on the main menu i get the following error:

" The expression onClick you entered as the event property setting produced the following error: Error acessing file. Network connection may have been lost.

* The expression may not result in the name of a macro, the name of a user-defined function , or [Event Procedure]
* There may have been an error evaluating the function, event, or macro."

The below information may help you to answer my questions:

1. The old application is running well on the A97 and all the buttons on the Main menu work well and by clicking them, they link to different forms. But not the new application on A2000. I am doing everything on my system and both applications (old and new) which i am working on are copies of the original database which is out on the network.

2. I found some differences when i looked at the contents of the database in A97 and A2000.

2a. Under Tables i found more tables in old DB of the type MSys*
2b. Under Reports i have all except one object and i dont know how to import it. Because it gives me the error saying "This object cannot be imported, exported or linked...."
2c. Under Tables, Reports, Forms, Queries i see a symbol besides all the objects in the old DB which i dont see in the new DB that i created.
The symbol looks like a synchronization symbol. It is a circle with two opposite arrows in it.

I am new to this field and trying to learn. Any suggestion from you regarding this problem would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi,

Access security has been enabled on the database in question. From what it sounds like, you are set up as standalone copies of access rather than a shared setup.

What you need to do is go to the NT4 box in the department the database comes from and look for a file called SYSTEM.MDW. This file contains usernames and passwords for the database system.
You can then copy it onto your system and join the workgroup (but back up your existing SYSTEM.MDW file first in case there are 2K databases that have it implemented).
Then you should be able to open the access 97 file with no problems and convert it to 2000.
