converting a publisher doc to word

If you have a copy of Publisher just load the .PUB file and select [blue]File[/blue]/[blue]Save As[/blue] and select a file type that your version of Word will recognize or can import.
If you don't have a copy of Publisher, the quickest and easy way would be to go back to the author of the document and have them save it in a different format as above. There might be some converter programs for .PUB files around but I haven't seen any.
