Converted Quark file - style sets rule outside of text box

Hi,

I'm using Mac Os 10.4 with Indesign CS.

I have converted a Quark document into InDesign and everything appears correct except the headings that have a rule above them. Whenever a new column begins the heading goes to the top of the text box. That is managable, however the rule appears floating above (outside) the text box. I need it to either not be there for that first item or to drop down as the "space before" style commands. InDesign ignores the space before for the first instance of the style but not when it appears in the body of the text box.

Adding space above the style has no effect. I have tried adjusting the Text Frame Options. While this moved the text down it still did not ameliorate the discrepancies in the columns.

Here is what the style has
(basic character) Myriad, Bold, 14pt size, 14pt lead, all caps, (indents and spacing) left indent: .5 in, first line indent: -.5 in, space before: .5 in, space after: .153 in, align to grid: none, (para rules) rule above, 2.5 pt weight, offset: .417 in. ---all the other text styles align to the grid

This doesn't occur when I create a new Indesign file. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Again,

A mistake---this does happen in a new InDesign document. So, this problem has nothing to do with the Quark conversion, but is purely an InDesign question.

How do you stop rules from emerging out of the top of your text boxes?

thanks!

That's because in your style you have paragraph rules set. Just deselect it if you don't want a rule. If it's offset too much, adjust the offset amount.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I would like to keep the rule but I would like it not to stick out of my text box. I can turn off the rule for the first entry in a column but the rules still stick out even if they occur at the top of a subsequent column. If I customize every column it won't leave flexibility for text reflow. It looks like InDesign removes the space above for paragraphes when then start a column. Does anyone konw how to turn that off?

I found the solution on an Adobe forum.

You can solve your rule above issue with a combination of:

1. Change the first baseline offset of all your text frames to Leading (you should set this as your default so it happens automatically in the future).

2. Create a character style that simply applies a leading value (unlike Quark's character styles, InDesign's can be sparse). Use as the value that distance from the top of your rule to the first baseline of your paragraph.

3. Use a nested style in your paragraph style that applies the rule-above that calls for this new character style to apply only to the first character of any such paragraph.

As for the Titling issue (as you call it), I'm not sure I fully understand what you're saying. Not being a Quark user, I don't have a frame of reference, but I am surprised if it overrides the left-side-bearing built into the glyphs of fonts for the first character of a paragraph (which is what you seem to be referring to).

You can get InDesign to ignore that side-bearing if you convert the character to an outline, but that will also cause it to ignore the right side-bearing, which might be as worse an issue as the one you're trying to resolve.
