I need to convert a WMV video to an MPEG/AVI file. Is there any FREE software available to acomplish this? Is this something that is easy to do? I have a video on WMV format and I want to put a link to this video on my website and I believe I will need the video in MPEG or AVI format. Correct me if i'm wrong.

WMV's will stream fine off a Windows webserver.
After you put your file on your website, type the proper path in your browser:
It should open windows media player and start playing.

just do a search on google for "convert wmv to avi"
Alot of free programs are very limited and may put something on your video or may only convert 30 seconds or so. Just search around for converters online. I have found that converting from wmv to asf then to avi is the easiest to get working but there are tons of ways to do it.
